Legno duro selezionato: legname essiccato in forno da oltre 3 generazioni

Aerial view of the Select Hardwoods kiln buildings and lumber yardSelect Hardwoods, un essiccazione in forno division of Church & Church Lumber Company in Millers Creek, North Carolina, has a proud tradition of supplying Appalachian hardwood to a global market.

Appalachian hardwood is valued for its color, grain, and other qualities, and together with the quality of Church & Church’s products, it has opened markets for the company in Asia and the European Union (EU). Its products are used in furniture, millwork, cabinetry, flooring, decking, log homes, containers, and pallets.

The company used to dry 100 percent poplar, but it couldn’t get all the poplar it needed, so it added red oak and white oak.

The timber comes from the vast Appalachian Mountain forests. After the trees are cut, subcontractors haul the logs to the Church & Church sawmill. Once the logs are sawn, the company trucks the lumber four miles to its Select Hardwoods facility.

At the time of this 2017 article, 4/4 (1-inch) poplar took about 7 days to dry, and 8/4 (2-inch) poplar took 12 days. Because oak is denser and dries more slowly, 4/4 oak took 35 days.

The Church family has three generations in the forest products industry. Church’s grandfather started in the business in the 1940s. His father, who helped his grandfather through the late ’40s, started Bruce Church Paneling in the early 1950s.

Rather than simply expand a single mill, as many operations do, the Church family tried a different approach.

“After I started my dry kiln business, my brother and dad bought a couple of mills together along with two other fellows. We decided to pool all our resources. They had a sawmill and I had a dry kiln that handled just 40,000 board feet. Since they wanted to get in the dry kiln business, it was a perfect marriage,” he says.

Church’s brother Sebastian runs the sawmill, while Kin runs Select Hardwoods. In 1994, Church expanded Select Hardwoods by adding more kilns. At the time of this article, it had six kilns with a capacity of 390,000 board feet.

Importanza della misurazione dell'umidità

Checking a stack of lumber with a handheld Wagner moisture meterLa misurazione dell'umidità è obbligatoria per le attività della Kin Church.

All of his customers require lumber at a specific moisture content (MC). Most want it at 9% to 10% MC.

“If the wood were installed in a home with 15% MC, once the homeowner turns on the heat or the house becomes much drier, the joints would start pulling apart. If the wood were in furniture and had excessive moisture levels, once it was exposed to much drier conditions, the glue joints would start cracking and falling apart,” Church says.

Holding a Wagner L722 lumber stack probe beside stacks of stickered lumberTo help Select Hardwoods maintain its quality, Church uses two Wagner moisture meters.

“We use the L612 model, which has a pad that accurately detects moisture in our lumber. Over the 13 years we’ve used it, it’s been extremely reliable,” he says.

“Possiamo anche allegare un Sonda per cataste di legname L722 about three feet long to it with a flexible cord like a telephone cord. Once we insert the probe between the boards, it has springs that press the end-mounted sensor flat against the wood. We then slide the probe slowly out of the stack, reading the moisture in each board as the sensor passes over it.

“This meter makes our job a heckuva lot easier,” Church says.

The L612 has since been replaced by the Misuratore di umidità del legno portatile industriale L5300, which also works with the L722 Lumber Stack Probe.

Vendete anche a piccoli fornitori o operate principalmente all'estero?

Ci troviamo a Prescott, Wisconsin.

    Grazie

    Janine

    • Ron Smith dice:

      Gianina,
